How do I use a Remote Camera Kit (RCK)?
A Remote Camera Kit (RCK) is a video encoder and recorder that is used to capture video from an HDMI 1080p source
3 Steps To Set Up Your Kit
1. Set Up your Network
2. Set Up Your Remote Camera Kit (RCK)
Click here to go to the RCK Setup Page.
3. Set Up Your iPad
Click here to go to the iPad Setup Page.
Prerequisites
The RCK requires an HDMI 1080p signal. If your camera only has an SDI output, you must convert the output to use it with the RCK. We recommend the Black Magic UpDownCross if needed to convert the signal. See the image at the bottom of this page if you need to configure the UpDownCross converter.
If you are connecting any IP camera, such as a Hudl Focus, to the RCK, you will instead need an NDI converter, as well as additional steps to connect the camera's feed to the RCK. Please schedule a time with one of our technicians using this link so that we can go over the separate instructions.
RCK Setup Steps
- Connect the HDMI cable to the "HDMI IN" port of the RCK.
The RCK has 2 HDMI ports. Make sure the HDMI 1080p video source is connected to the "HDMI In" port and not the "HDMI Out" port on the RCK.
-
See the pictures below to identify the "HDMI In" location for your model.

-
- Connect the Ethernet cable from the SkyCoach network to the Ethernet port of the RCK. The cable is usually labeled "RCK Only"
- Connect the RCK to power
- Open the SkyCoach application if it does not automatically open
- Once you have all 4 green checks, click on "Join An Event."
If your RCK has a red X for any of the listed items, be sure to:
- Contact support at 318-629-5701 for live troubleshooting with a technician
- Read the error message on the RCK screen for more information
- View common reasons for red Xs to appear on the page Why do I have red Xs on my Remote Camera Kit (RCK)?
Click on the name of the event to enter the record screen.
Note: ONE person will clip the plays for the entire SkyCoach system by hitting the start circle and stop square on one of the RCKs or from a remote control iPad.
SkyCoach RCK Settings
On the screen where the checkmark list is located, you can access the SkyCoach settings using the Settings button in the top left corner.
Within the Settings tab, there are two options that are commonly used: Camera Angle and Show Record Controls.
Camera Angle
The Camera Angle setting changes the name of the angle that the RCK will record its clips for. For example, if the RCK's Camera Angle is set to Wide, all clips recorded from that RCK will be shown under the Wide angle in the SkyCoach app on an iPad.
Camera Angle choices
Show Record Controls
The Show Record Controls setting controls whether the extra tagging options are visible on the RCK screen. Clips recorded from the RCK will not show these options; they are only present on the RCK's screen.

RCK Warnings and Precautions
- DO NOT CHANGE ANY OF THE OPERATING SYSTEM SETTINGS ON THE REMOTE CAMERA KIT (RCK).
- It is OK to change SkyCoach settings, like Camera Angle, on the RCK (see the previous section about SkyCoach RCK settings).
- Never connect the RCK to WiFi. It is encased in metal. It might work in limited situations, but will almost always fail!
- Do not increase the display brightness on the RCKs with the white exterior. When increased to 80% or more they may start flickering.
- When using the RCK with a tower end zone camera, DO NOT let the 50ft HDMI cable hang from your camera. The weight of the cable will break the HDMI plug on the cable as well as the HDMI output port on the camera. Use clips, zip ties, or velcro to secure the cable to the end zone tower near the top so that the weight of the cable is not pulling on the plug. You will get the best results when you tie off the cable at multiple intervals. The cable must be secured before plugging it into your camera.
Updating RCK, include article & maybe caveat about unknown apps? Unsure if steps below should be omitted (maybe this should be on the Updating Host/RCK page instead):
If you are unable to update the RCK, make sure it is set to allow installation of unknown apps. Follow the steps below to check/turn the setting on:
- Short swipe up from the bottom and hit the circle to get to the home screen
- Hold down on the SkyCoach app icon
- Select "App info"
- Expand the Advanced dropdown
- Select "Install unknown apps"
- Toggle on "Allow from this source"
- Hit the square to swipe the settings window closed
- Reopen the SkyCoach app and continue
