What is AI Data Assist: Automatic Play Data Tagging?
AI Data Assist uses AI technology to watch each play's video and automatically fill in the play's situational data (Down, Distance, Yard Line, and Hash) so your staff spends less time typing and more time coaching. It also computes yards gained automatically once two consecutive plays have been analyzed.
The analysis runs entirely on your iPad. After a one-time online activation, it works on the field with no internet connection.
For each play, the AI also draws its read of the line of scrimmage and the first-down line over the play's thumbnail, so you can verify at a glance that it read the snap correctly.
Requirements
- SkyCoach version: 19.4 or later
- iPad hardware: an iPad with an A12 Bionic chip or newer: iPad (8th generation), iPad Air (3rd generation), iPad mini (5th generation), iPad Pro (2018), or any newer model. On older iPads, SkyCoach will report "AI Data Assist isn't supported on this iPad."
- One-time internet connection: before you use AI Data Assist, the iPad must connect online (Wi-Fi or cellular) to activate the AI. After that, it works fully offline. We recommend activating at home or in the office before game day.
- One device per network: enable AI Data Assist on only one iPad per game network.
- Shared games: in a shared (two-team) game, AI Data Assist is available to the home team's devices.
Turning it on
- Open SkyCoach Settings and turn on 2MW AI Data Assist. This is the master switch for this iPad.
- Open your game and turn on the 2MW AI toggle in the playlist.
- The first time you enable it for a game, you'll choose which camera angle the AI should analyze. The angle must shows clear view of the sideline markers. This is typically labeled as the wide or sideline view, but the angles may be labeled wrong on the recording device.
What you'll see during a game
Plays are analyzed one at a time, in game order:
- Assist Queued (N): the play is waiting its turn (N is its place in line). Tap the badge to move a play to the front of the line.
- AI Processing: the play is being analyzed right now.
- A Processing X/N counter shows overall progress for the game.
- Plays whose video hasn't downloaded yet simply wait; they're analyzed as soon as the video arrives.
When a play finishes, its data fields are filled in and outlined:
- Green outline: the AI filled in this field.
- Red outline: the AI could not read this field from the video. You can enter it manually as usual.
Reviewing the AI's work
Each analyzed play shows the AI's line-of-scrimmage and first-down lines over the thumbnail, plus two buttons:
- ✅ Accept confirms the AI's values. The play is marked Reviewed and the outlines clear.
- ✏️ Correct opens a side-by-side screen with the AI's values on the left and editable fields on the right. Adjust anything that's wrong and tap Done; the play is marked Corrected.
Accepted and corrected values save and sync exactly like manually tagged data.
Tips for best results
- Use the wide/sideline camera angle.
- Keep the field's yard lines and markers clearly visible in the frame.
- Activate the AI (one-time online step) before heading to a field without internet.
Troubleshooting
"For AI Data Assist to work, this iPad needs a one-time connection to the internet."
The AI hasn't been activated on this iPad yet. Connect to Wi-Fi or cellular once, then try again. This can also appear if the iPad has internet but can't reach Apple's iCloud service, so check any content filters or restrictions.
"This iPad is low on resources and needs to be restarted to use the AI."
Restart the iPad (power it fully off and on). Force-quitting the SkyCoach app is not enough.
"AI Data Assist couldn't start on this iPad. Restarting it may help…"
Restart the iPad. If the message keeps appearing, contact SkyCoach support.
"AI Data Assist isn't supported on this iPad."
This iPad's hardware can't run the AI models. See the Requirements section for supported models.
A play failed, or "2MW could not determine any values for this play."
The AI couldn't read that clip. This can happen with unusual camera angles, poor lighting, or obstructed views. Tag the play manually; the rest of the game is unaffected.
Some fields are filled and others are outlined in red.
That's a partial read. The AI records what it could see and leaves the rest to you.
