SkyCoach Setup for the Superdome Stadium in New Orleans, LA

If your team is playing in the Superdome, this article will help you with optimal setup of your SkyCoach equipment. We will discuss: station location, proper alignment, power requirements, and special cases.

You will first need to get your bearings which will be easiest from the field.

From the field you should be able to clearly see the Press Box area which is located on the 7th floor just above sections 639 (Home) and 641 (Visitor).

Setup is fastest with 3 people:  1) Helper to setup sideline station, 2) filmer for end zone station, and 3) filmer for press box station.

Whether you are on the home or visitor side, we found the most efficient order to set up your network is to begin with the Sideline Station.

On each side of the field there is provided from under the bleachers one 3 outlet extension cord with not much length. You will need:

  • 1 stand
  • 1 - 50' extension cord
  • your sideline equipment
    • 1 red and black stickered bridge antenna
    • 1 sideline wifi antenna
    • 1 SkyCoach power source - this is either a power tube, power box, or black box  🖼️
  • SPECIAL: 1 power surge strip if you plan on setting up a tv

Place your stand at the 25 yardline as close to the field as possible so it is well away from the stands; raise the stand to its maximum height; and point the antenna directly at the press box station. This position is just just outside of the players box. When testing, the ipads had plenty of range at this location and the antennas had a clear line of sight. IMG_1683-1

[YES, at your home stadium we prefer for and advise that the equipment be set up at the 35 yard line, but because of the height of the superdome's stadium seating, we were unable to position the stand close enough to the field in order to point over the seating ledge of the upper deck when at the 35, so we moved just outside of the players box.]

You can skip the end zone setup section if you only film from the press box.

Next, take the nearest elevator on either end of the field to the 5th floor and head to the landing at section 501 (Visitors) or 531 (Home) to set up the End Zone Station.

You will need:

  • 1 stand (if you only have 2 stands use them at the sideline and press box stations)
  • 1 - 25' extension cord
  • 1 power surge strip
  • your end zone equipment:
    • 1 red and white stickered bridge antenna (if you only have 2 stands this antenna can be attached to the front of the railing on the landing)
    • 1 power tube - this is either a power tube, power box, or black box  🖼️
    • 1 remote camera kit
  • your camera (backup battery or power cable)
  • 1 hdmi to micro or hdmi to mini (depending on your camera)

Position your stand to the front of the landing leaving room for your camera stand on either side, careful not to block the antenna's line of sight to the press box; raise the stand to its maximum height; point the antenna directly at your press box station.

Time for setup is limited. Separating the equipment by station before traveling is most helpful. Though 25' extension cords worked for each of our stations, it is best to have more footage than not enough. So, have extra extension cords and/or longer ones on hand, just in case.

Last, you can only take elevators 11 or 16,17 to the 7th floor. Between booths 7 (Home) and 8, take the stairs down to the landing to set up your Press Box Station.

From the field you should be able to clearly see the Press Box area which is located on the 7th floor just above sections 639 (Home) and 641 (Visitor). You will set up the Host Box and film the sideline view from the landing just below your coach box.

Set up your press box station on the landing just below booths 6 (Visitor) and 5 if you are with the visiting team.

You will need:

  • 1 stand
  • 1 - 25' extension cord
  • 1 power surge strip
  • your press box equipment:
    • 1 red and black stickered bridge antenna
    • 1 red and white stickered bridge antenna
    • 1 coach box wifi antenna
    • press box power - this is either a toolbox or black box
    •  🖼️
    • 1 remote camera kit
    • 1 - 100' ethernet cable
  • your camera (with backup battery or power cable)
  • 1 hdmi to micro or hdmi to mini (depending on your camera)

Position your stand to the front of the landing leaving room for your camera stand on either side, careful not to block the antenna's line of sight to the press box; raise the stand to its maximum height; point the antennas directly at the sideline (red and black) and end zone (red and white) stations. You will need to connect the 100' ethernet cable to your router and run it up the stairs into booth 7 (Home) or booth 6 (Visitor) for your coachbox antenna. Your coachbox antenna can be placed on the stair rail or table top in the press box booth. Once you have power to the press box station and the antennas have bridged (this is indicated by the four blue signal strength lights on the stickered antennas), your network is ready for use!

This setup description should be familiar to you, aside from the specifics about the stadium and the 25 yard line for the sideline station (which for normal setup outside of this stadium should be located at the 35 yard line).

Note: the Home and Visitor sides and booth numbers are subject to change from year to year, so please check your official documentation for current information.
